Recipient of the JFB Holiday Party Donations
Aunt Hattie's Place is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a safe, stable, nurturing, and long-term home for abused, abandoned, and neglected children in foster care. Founded in February, 1997 by Dr. Hattie N. Washington, AHP strives to provide a stable home for youngsters who will be in foster care, often their entire childhood and teenage years.
AHP currently provides a home to eighteen young boys, 12-19 years old. These children, lovingly called "SuperKids", come to AHP with a wide variety of psychological and behavioral problems, as well as, poor academic records. They usually have a sense of hopelessness, lack of respect for authority, and a general negative outlook on their future. These problems typically are associated with feelings of loss and anger resulting from their parents' vicious cycle of substance abuse and/or incarceration, and are exacerbated by the stigma identified with being in foster care.
AHP has been sited, by the Department of Human Resources, as a model for other group homes, because of the significant progress its residents have made in their academics, behavior, and self-esteem. This progress is mainly due to the high expectations AHP administration and team have of the children and the love and stability the children feel because of the long-term nature of the home.Thank you to Past President Sharon Christmas DeBerry for identifying this worthy recipient for JFB’s Holiday Party donations.

On December 18, 2008 we held our Annual Christmas Party at Florian
Hall. The party was well attended. Even Judge
El-Amin joined in with the true party goers as they
danced to the Cupid Shuffle. Although
he seemed to focus more on his feet, he was right in step. Great
job Judge! A great time was had by all! There were many new faces
in attendance. I hope to see each of you at general membership
meetings and other Association events. This year, members were
asked to bring a toy or a $10 donation in lieu of a toy. We collected
a lot of toys and $350 with which more toys were purchased. In
this time of recession, it was nice to see everyone so giving. Thank
you to each of you who donated a toy and/or money. On Christmas
Eve, Abigale Bruce-Watson and I presented the toys
to Shepard’s
Cove, a homeless shelter for women and children. The Administration
was very grateful. I am sure our contribution brought smiles
to a lot of faces on Christmas morning. Sharon Christmas-DeBerry.

It was a pleasure to see all of the
members who came to the JFB Annual Holiday Party. Folks ate, danced,
watched a movie, and chatted from 7 pm until midnight. Everyone appeared
to be relaxed and had a good time. In the true spirit of the season,
some of the party-goers brought gifts, which were taken to the Family
Crisis Center, along with a check for $100 made possible by Marilyn
Pierre's generous return of her proceeds from the "50/50"
drawing. Thank you to Holly and Jodi Reed, our gracious hosts. Here
are a few photos from the Holiday Party.
