J. Franklyn Bourne Young Lawyers Section
Presents

DECADES PARTY WITH A PURPOSE

RECAP

Congratulations to the Young Lawyers Section (YLD) of the J. Frankly Bourne Bar Association for the successful launch of their new section. Thank you to everyone that attended the 2007 Launch Party. A special “thank you” goes out to Bill and Gail Murray for graciously opening their home to host this event.

The purpose of the party was to support the ongoing fundraising efforts for the J. Franklyn Bourne Scholarship Fund. To that end, we are pleased to report that the party was a great success and raised much needed capital. Way to go YLD Section!!! You should be proud of your efforts.

Rumor has it that we maybe able to make this a yearly event. Good Work! If you are interested in joining the Young Lawyers Section, please contact Letoria Knight for more information. If you missed the event, please be sure to check out our photo gallery below.

JFB'S YOUNG LAWYER DIVISION

The Young Lawyers Division (YLD) supports the overall mission of J. Franklyn Bourne, with the specific goal of fostering peer relationships between young attorneys and the more experienced attorneys in the organization. This focus will ensure that there is a core group of young attorneys ready and available to support the sustainability of the organization. The members of the YLD leadership committee are: Allison Green, Letoria Knight, Derron Parks, Rachael Stafford, JaCina Stanton, and Mia Woodard.

In January 2008, the YLD plans to launch a series of workshops specifically geared toward the successful development of newly admitted and less seasoned attorneys. The YLD will meet once a month on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30pm, at a residential community center on Elder Oaks Road, Bowie, Maryland, near Bowie Town Center. The meeting format will be a casual, happy hour environment with open discussion on legal topics such as social justice, litigation, politics and more. Every other month a CLE program will be offered in furtherance of the mission to adequately develop the various legal interest of the group. Payment of dues to J. Franklyn Bourne is all that is required.

Additionally, the YLD plans to offer:

  • A job board, including listings of practice buyouts;
  • Mentorship opportunities through Pro Bono projects that expand members level experience;
  • A composite calendar of events that includes all local bar association events;
  • Bar liaison reports on topics of interest and resource materials offered by other organizations; and

CLE programs on the following topics:

1. PREPARING YOUR TOOLBOX: What every attorney needs to start their own practice at minimal expense and risk
2. PRE-TRIAL LITIGATION: Hearings, Motions, and Settlement
3. DEVELOPING & PROTECTING YOUR REPUTATION: Avoiding the Attorney Grievance Commission
